An Unhealthy Obsession With Big Bro

Auburn football does not wake up thinking about winning championships. Well, unless it's about claiming some from the 1830s.

Auburn football wakes up in a cold sweat, bolts right out of bed, and whispers “Alabama” like it just heard a noise downstairs.

That’s the program. That’s the brand. That’s the entire business model.

Before coffee. Before breakfast. Before checking the weather. The first coherent thought in Auburn’s head every morning is not “how do we get better,” it’s “what if Alabama exists today and we don’t like it.”

This is why Auburn is the most emotionally unstable program in college football. They are not building anything. They are reacting. Always reacting. Alabama hires a coach? Auburn panics. Alabama recruits a five-star? Auburn offers six three-stars and tells themselves it’s “gritty.” Alabama breathes? Auburn fires someone.

Auburn doesn’t have a long-term plan. Auburn has a jump-scare response.

And that’s why the program oscillates between “Top-10 team” and “losing to New Mexico State at home” with absolutely no warning. When your entire identity is tied to ruining one rival’s season, the rest of the year becomes a weird side quest you forget to finish.

They don’t recruit to win titles. They recruit to maybe beat Alabama once every four years if the weather is weird and the ball bounces off three helmets and a ref’s shin. That’s the ceiling. That’s the dream. Hang the banner.

Coaching searches are pure comedy. Auburn doesn’t ask “can this guy build a program.” Auburn asks “does this guy look like he might accidentally beat Alabama in a rivalry game at some point.” If the answer is a hesitant yes, congratulations. Here’s $70 million and a buyout clause that will financially crater the athletic department until 2038.

Think I’m kidding? Look at their recent hires. Hugh Freeze… a [redacted] who’s best season was 9 wins but hey! At least he beat Bama twice! Now, they get Alex Golesh from the Group of 5. Is he a good coach? Maybe. But that’s not why they hired him. They hired him because “Oh my god, did you see him take Bama to the wire!”

And the fans love it. That’s the wildest part. Auburn fans will go 6–6, miss the playoff, miss Atlanta, miss relevance entirely, but if they beat Alabama? Best season ever. Magical. Spiritual. Frame the ticket. Name your child after the kicker.

That’s not rivalry energy. That’s little-brother behavior.

Alabama measures itself against history. Auburn measures itself against Alabama’s mood. Alabama asks “are we elite?” Auburn asks “Did we upset you?”

And until Auburn wakes up one morning and thinks about literally anything else, this cycle will never end. Chaos. Coach firings. One miracle win. A parade for finishing fourth. Then repeat.

Because Auburn isn’t cursed. They’re just obsessed.

Oh… and before anyone gets comfortable on Rocky Top… yeah, you too, Tennessee. Same disease. Different shade of orange
