Final week of the regular season is in the books, lot of good games this past weekend but not a ton of upsets. I'll break down my thoughts on some of the games and talk about conference championship Saturday a little bit. I saw the A&M loss to UT coming given that UT has played much better teams all year. I don't have the highest expectations for A&M in the playoffs but this season is already a resounding success for going better than 8-4. Elko was a slam dunk hire that I think some of the other SEC teams should take notice of. You don't have to poach another elite program's head coach to have success in the league. Guys that win at smaller programs like Duke can win at larger programs when they get the recruiting bump that the logo comes with.

The Game up in Ann Arbor was a bit disappointing , but OSU is looking unstoppable this year. Their defense is going to be a problem for anyone they draw in the playoffs, but I'm not ready to give them the Natty yet. We will see how they do against IU on Saturday. Personally I am rooting for the Hoosiers to avenge the 1976 scoreboard incident:

Speaking of IU, they dropped a spot even after their big win against Purdue as their SOS couldn't compare to OSU. Their win over Oregon continues to age well and am excited to see what they can do in the playoffs with a first round bye (if the committee does what's right). Hoosier fans deserve Cignetti and this season they're having.

The Iron Bowl in Jordan-Hare didn't disappoint again, taking years off the lives of everyone who had any stake in it. The common sentiment is that Auburn at home gets all the voodoo magic in their favor, but the past three games there have been heartbreaking losses for them. They also hired USF's head coach afterwards (which I think will be a great hire), but it's funny how their main criteria for a HC is whether they can beat or closely lose to Bama. Alabama should be in the playoffs even with a loss next week given that they won the SEC regular season, but I don't trust the committee to follow their own precedent they set last year. Georgia and Alabama are both facing some injuries, but I expect another instant classic when these two teams meet. The spread is opening with Georgia favored by a few points, but they are yet to beat Alabama in Atlanta.

Over in the Mountain West, the conference championship game was decided by a computer poll aggregate for the four way tie between UNLV, Boise State, New Mexico and SDSU. It landed on UNLV and Boise State which is what my rankings agree with. I have them ranked at

  • UNLV - 39
  • Boise State - 45
  • SDSU - 48
  • New Mexico - 51

I'm happy to work with any conferences that want to use the Johnson Index to break future ties.

Cheers to another weekend of College Football. Regular season is wrapped up so enjoy every game you get to watch, it'll be the offseason before we know it.
